Bone Build
SLOW DOWN / STOP OSTEOPOROSIS
In women, bone density begins to decline around the age of 35, accelerating
towards the menopause and then continues at a slower rate.
Osteoporosis occurs when the process that removes old bone and replaces it
with new bone becomes imbalanced. Bone is re-absorbed more quickly than it is
replaced so bones weaken and may break.
There two types of osteoporosis:
- Type 1 is believed to be caused by hormonal changes, particularly loss of
oestrogen, which causes the loss of minerals from the bones to accelerate.
- Type 2 is linked to dietary deficiency when there is a lack of calcium and
other specific nutrients, in particular Vitamin D which is necessary for the
proper absorption of calcium.
Our bones provide structural support for muscles, protect vital organs, and
store the calcium essential for bone density and strength. Bones are constantly
changing as they can heal and are also affected by diet and exercise. Until
the age of about thirty, you build and store bone efficiently. Then as part
of the natural ageing process, your bones begin to break down faster than new
bone can be formed.
Osteoporosis is more prevalent in those who eat meat because of the raised
acid levels in the diet, which indirectly causes the loss of bone calcium by
the excretion of calcium in the urine. High salt intake and trace mineral deficiencies
are also thought to be significant factors, as well as refined sugar intake
which also increases urinary excretion of calcium.
Women over the age of forty five (and men) can slow down or cease osteoporosis
by supplementing their diets with important nutrients that support bone density.
Western diets that are often high in meat and dairy discourage the uptake of
many essential micronutrients essential for maintaining bone density. Flavonoids
such as proanthocyanidins stabilise the ground substance in bone onto which
bone mineral is laid, and Omega 3 fatty acids are needed for optimum retention
of bone mineral ? both of which are often missing from our diets.
Other key nutrients than those mentioned previously ? a deficiency of
any one of which will adversely affect bone health are Vitamins B6, B12, C,
D, K and Folic acid, Boron, Silicon Magnesium, Zinc and Manganese. Bone Build
is combination of all these nutrients that not only aid bone density but also
provide support for the organic framework of the bone.
Post Menopausal Women:
If you are of this age we would recommend a combination of Bone Build, DHEA
and / or Progesterone Cream irrespective of whether you think your diet contains
sufficient nutrients
NOTE: Calcium is available in many forms and unless the most absorbable forms
are taken, as little as 4% will be absorbed by the body, particularly by people
with low stomach acid levels.
If you are concerned about Type 1 osteoporosis then we would recommend supplementing
with DHEA a hormone whose production progressively declines with age together
with natural progesterone cream which will offset the reduced oestrogen levels
post menopause without cancer concerns that occur with the use of synthetic
oestrogens in HRT.
